National Flag

The current flag is divided diagonally from the lower hoist-side corner, with the upper triangle yellow and the lower triangle orange. Centred along the dividing line is a large black and white dragon facing away from the hoist side. The dragon is holding a norbu, or jewel, in each of its claws

National Sport

Archery was adopted as national game when Bhutan joined United Nations in 1971. May be the game was played in the country way before that but it gained its popularity thereafter. Bhutan was also known for archery games to the other parts of the world and it still is.

National Emblem

The national emblem is contained in a circle with two dragons framing a double diamond – thunderbolt (dorji) placed above a lotus, surmounted by a jewel. The dorji symbolizes harmony between secular and religious power while the jewel represents sovereign power. The quality of purity is presented in the lotus.

The raven the national bird of Bhutan

National Bird

The national bird is the raven. As noted above, it the most prominent component of the royal crown. In Bhutan, the raven represents the deity Gonpo Jarodongchen, the raven-headed Mahakala, one of the country’s chief guardian deities.

Takin-National Animal of Bhutan

National Animal

The national animal is the takin (Burdorcas taxicolor). This bovid is also associated with religious history and mythology. Today it is a rare animal, and its conservation status is “vulnerable.” It has a thick neck and short muscular legs.

Blue Poppy-National flower

National Flower

It takes two to three years for a plant to develop from seeds. In the early 1990s, the blue poppy was declared as the national flower of Bhutan. One unique feature of this flower is that the blue blood flows through the plant and it’s a rare flower. It grows to 1 meter high and is found at higher altitudes. It was discovered in 1933 by a British Botanist, George Sherriff in a remote part of Sakteng in eastern Bhutan.

Cypress – National tree

National Tree

The national tree is cypress, which is rich in resources, and large cypress trees can be seen near the temple. This tree grows in a temperate zone between 1800 and 3500 meters. Its ability to survive in rugged terrain is comparable to bravery and simplicity. Bhutan is also known as Tsenden Jong- the Land of Cypress because the tree is abundant all over the kingdom.
